What is Fructose Intolerance?
Fructose Intolerance is also known as Fructose Malabsorption.
It can develop at any age, but usually in adults and is a condition where the body cannot absorb large amounts of Fructose in the diet.
The Fructose that is not absorbed is left behind in the gut, and this provides a food source for bacteria.
The bacteria eat the Fructose and create lots of gas and other substances causing bloating, pain and diarrhoea.
(This is not the same as a different illness - Hereditary Fructose Intolerance - also known as HFI.)
This is a simple outline of the condition - you can get more detailed information from your GP, Gastroenterologist and Dietitian.
